Guidelines to Support GenAI in Learning

The Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) has developed guidelines to support the integration of GenAI into classroom learning. These guidelines were developed in consultation with parents, caregivers, families, students, educators and staff.

These guidelines support student learning and the responsible use of GenAI. They are based on our current understanding and best practices of GenAI. They include:

These guides will continue to be adapted to align with:

  • Technological advancements
  • Privacy and safety standards
  • Our evolving understanding of its uses

Integrating AI Into Classroom Learning

GenAI can be an exciting and innovative way to enhance learning. While GenAI tools are available, their use in classroom learning is ultimately guided by professional judgment.

GenAI is an optional learning tool available to students in Grades 7 to 12 to use under the guidance of their teacher for school-related work. Teachers may choose to include, limit, or omit the use of GenAI tools at their discretion.

Be S.M.A.R.T. When Using AI

When using AI tools, students should always remember to use the S.M.A.R.T. framework.

  • S — Stop and Protect Your Privacy
  • M — Make It Yours
    • AI can help you get started, but your work should sound like you. Revise, rewrite, and add your own ideas.
  • A — Acknowledge Your Use of AI
    • Let your teacher know when AI has supported your work. Use either a formal citation or a simple note, depending on the assignment.
  • R — Review Expectations
    • Check with your teacher to understand when AI is allowed, restricted, or not permitted.
  • T — Think Critically
    • AI can make mistakes. Always fact‑check and evaluate whether the information is accurate, appropriate, and useful.

Using GenAI Responsibly and with Academic Integrity

GenAI should never do the work for you. You should always be honest about which parts are your own work and which parts were assisted by the tool. It will also not always be appropriate to use GenAI for tasks and assignments. Always check with your teacher before using any AI tool for an assignment or task.

When using AI, students are expected to follow Board Policies:
