I am excited to be taking on the role of Chair for the Waterloo Region District School Board. In my time on the board, I have been a passionate advocate for diversity, equity and staff and student well-being.
I believe we are entering a period of great positive change for our board. We are rolling out a new strategic plan that will put our students first – each and every one, engage our staff, families and caregivers, and breed a culture of innovation. I believe these changes will have an incredible impact on our students in the years to come.
In my personal life, I work at Sun Life Financial as an advisor helping people every day to build a better financial future. I live in Elmira with my wife Amber and couldn’t be more proud to represent the great communities of Woolwich and Wellesley townships where I was born and raised.

I previously served as the chairperson of the Waterloo Region District School Board, having been selected by the other trustees on four occasions. Ever since coming to the Region as a university student, I have volunteered my services to its youth. I have coached soccer and hockey, served on the board of minor hockey, and am currently involved in finding financial assistance to ensure that all can participate in community sports. I have been a member of the local high tech business community for more than 25 years, as a software developer, technical communicator, instructional designer and trainer, continuous improvement champion, and manager of software development and customer support. After many years of working for a major corporation, I now operate my own business.
I have also been an executive member with the Mennonite Coalition for Refugee Support and the Society for Technical Communications.
I have been married for more than 30 years and have two children who have gone through the local school school system.

As the longest serving Trustee in the history of the Waterloo Region District School Board, I am humbled by my tenth re-election. As a Trustee, I am engaged and constantly increasing my knowledge and effectiveness to make a difference at the Board table.
I am a strong and passionate advocate for both public education and children with special needs, as demonstrated by my 26 years as a member of the Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC).
My involvement and advocacy of children with special needs resulted in the privilege of receiving a Cabinet Appointment from the Province of Ontario to the Minister’s Advisory Council on Special Education, a position I held for the maximum six-year term.
My tenure with the Waterloo Region District School Board includes two years as Chair of the Board, two years as Vice-Chair and membership on every Board committee.
In 2011, I was presented with the most prestigious honour available for a public school board trustee in the Province of Ontario, the “Dr. Harry Paikin Award of Merit”. The award is presented for outstanding commitment to students, public education and the community by the Ontario Public School Boards Association.
In 2012, I received a Cabinet Appointment from the Province of Ontario to the Accessibility Standards Council/Standards Development Committee. The mandate of the Council is to review the five Legislated Standards of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (2005) and to develop new Standards. The goal of the Act is making Ontario totally accessible for all citizens by 2025.
In my private life, I am an author, small business owner and international speaker. I am a graduate of Wilfrid Laurier University. I have volunteered on many local community committees and spent several years as a member of the Rotary Clubs of both Waterloo and Kitchener. I was also a Director on the Kitchener Rangers Hockey Club for 25 years and now an Honourary Director.
As a Trustee, I want to use my experience in the area of governance, keeping the Board focused on our role as mandated by the Province. I strongly believe being an effective Trustee requires a commitment to teamwork. It is not just the championing of an issue, but the small things you do each day to make the Board stronger. Transparency and communication with students, parents and the public is critical to the success of the Board.
Student achievement and appropriate success for every student is very important to me.

I am proud and excited to be representing Waterloo/Wilmot as a school board trustee. I am a recently retired Public Health Nurse who has had the pleasure of working in elementary, secondary and alternative schools as a school nurse for over 30 years. I am a graduate of the Waterloo Region District School Board as are my husband and my children. I graduated from UWO with my Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
I am passionate about and value education, educators, youth and my community. I understand that there is a steep learning curve and I will initially focus my time and energy on quickly getting up to speed on policies/procedures and key information needed to do this role. I will listen and represent the community and advocate for the issues and concerns that are brought to my attention.
As a trustee, I cannot act alone. The board must work together as a team and I commit to lead by example with open communication, collaboration and adaptability with the clear goal of always putting students first. I am someone who is open to new insights, learning and ideas. I promise to be prepared for what this job entails and to listen without judgement or bias.

I have served as a Trustee since 1989, not because of what I could gain but for what I could give. Having served the Canadian public for over 35 years as a soldier, police officer, public servant, trustee and a community volunteer, I have gained a variety of valuable knowledge and experience that I believe helps me to make sound decisions as a trustee. My story is not uncommon. I immigrated to Canada in my early teens and soon found myself living on my own while trying to get an education and make something of myself. The dedicated staff of Kitchener Collegiate Institute invested in me and this helped form the foundation for my successes in life. They put my interests ahead of their own and taught me that it was my responsibility to pay it forward. That’s why I serve you as a trustee. While I always aim to strike a balance that meets everyone’s needs, student and public interest are my priority governing all of my decisions as a trustee. The decisions made by trustees today can affect an entire generation; they need to be the right decisions for the right reasons.

It is my honour to serve as one of your trustees from Kitchener. As a mother of a young child attending a WRDSB school, I decided to become a trustee in order to help parents and children navigate the system and to also contribute to the building of a better future for all children. As an elected representative I look forward to bringing constituents concerns forward at the board table and to involve students, parents, staff and other stakeholders in the decision-making process.
When I am not busy working as a trustee, I am busy running my own business and spending quality time with my family.
