Critical Thinking And Misinformation

GenAI can produce answers that sound correct but are actually wrong, biased or incomplete. AI is designed to predict patterns, not verify facts. This means it can produce:

  • Hallucinations: Information that sounds real but is completely made up.
  • Biased Information: Responses that favour certain perspectives or stereotypes.
  • Deepfakes: Fake images, videos, or audio that look and sound real.

Don’t accept GenAI responses as fact. Apply critical thinking to confirm facts, identify biases, assess sources and make informed decisions.

EVERY Decision-Making Framework

The EVERY framework helps users to think critically while using GenAI.

  • E — Evaluate the GenAI output to make sure it meets your needs.
  • V — Verify the output using reliable sources to make sure there is no misinformation or bias.
  • E — Engage with GenAI by providing additional prompts and more details to improve outputs. Use thoughtful, specific questions.
  • R — Revise and edit the content, and be sure to put it in your own voice. AI should be used as a starting point and not as a final product.
  • Y — You are responsible for what you create using GenAI. Always be transparent about how and when you have used these tools.
