Navigating The World Of AI: A Guide for Parents, Families and Caregivers

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) becomes a larger part of our digital landscape, we are committed to helping students use these tools safely, ethically, and effectively.

AI In The Classroom

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) tools are currently enabled for Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) students in Grades 7 to 12. While only students in these grades have access to these tools, we believe AI literacy starts early.

Students in Kindergarten to Grade 6 will learn about AI literacy using lessons and materials from Ministry-approved vendors. By doing this, teachers help students build a foundation of digital citizenship and AI literacy. This works to ensure all students understand how AI works long before they begin using it for schoolwork.

Human Connection and AI

As we explore these tools, it is important to remember that AI is a technology designed to mimic human interaction, not replace it. The WRDSB mental health team encourages families to remember that:

  • Language Matters: Try to avoid attributing human characteristics to AI. Referring to AI as having “neural pathways” or using personal pronouns and nicknames can blur the lines between technology and people.
  • The “Mirror” Effect: AI chatbots are designed to be agreeable. Unlike real-world friendships, which require compromise, reciprocity, and navigating different opinions, AI often only affirms our own thoughts. This can sometimes make real-world social interactions feel more difficult by comparison.
  • Prioritize Human Support: While AI can feel like a quick source of help, it lacks the empathy and safety guardrails of a trusted adult. AI can unintentionally reinforce negative thought patterns or harmful ideas.

Important: If your child is struggling with their mental health, they should always reach out to a trusted adult or a professional service rather than an AI chatbot. The Kids Help Phone is also available (24/7). To seek help, you can:

  • Call Kids Help Phone: 1-800-668-6868
  • Text Kids Help Phone: 686868
