At the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB), we know teaching and curriculum are the foundation for student success. We also know that the spaces where students learn matter for their growth and development.
That is why this monthly feature will highlight the different spaces across the WRDSB that help students learn, connect and grow independently.
From collaborative study areas to creative and innovative spaces, each featured element helps students succeed. The hard work of our Facility Services team shows our commitment to building a system where all students are provided with the opportunities to access their chosen pathway in learning and life.
Bluevale Collegiate Institute (BCI) – Alternative Continuum of Education (ACE) Classroom
Why it Shines
To create a more functional learning space, staff at Bluevale Collegiate Institute (BCI) envisioned a universal washroom inside the Alternative Continuum of Education (ACE) classroom. Instead of reducing classroom space, they combined two rooms to create a bigger, fully equipped ACE classroom that meets all program needs. This upgrade improves accessibility and makes the learning environment better for everyone.
“Our students now have the opportunity to enjoy more space and greater access to hands-on, technology-based, and preferred activities—allowing them to engage more independently,” said Lori Artinger, ACE classroom teacher. “The warm, dim lighting and open-concept environment create an inviting atmosphere that fosters curiosity, creativity, and a love for learning.”
Forest Heights Collegiate Institute (FHCI) – Media Room
Why it Shines
The Partial Tech Wing renovation at Forest Heights Collegiate Institute (FHCI) turned two large classrooms into four separate learning spaces. The split allowed for the addition of two new programmable rooms, which include a Communications Technology space with a new green screen and sound control room.
Other upgrades include:
- New windows and lighting
- Fresh paint
These upgrades create a bright, welcoming space for staff and students.
“This space gives students the freedom to experiment with media tools, collaborate, and have fun creating in an environment where they’re more than learners,” said Rob Waldeck, teacher at FHCI.
Suddaby Public School – Lobby Elevator
Why it Shines
The new lobby elevator at Suddaby Public School has made this 150-year-old school fully accessible. Staff saved space for the elevator shaft during past renovations, so this upgrade could happen seamlessly. In the summer of 2024, construction on the elevator began, alongside the last phase of air conditioning and the installation of a full sprinkler system.
Other upgrades include:
- Student washrooms on the top floor of the school
- Replaced original 1922 wood windows with bright, fully functioning matching windows
- Complete library renovation
Now, with accessible washrooms on every floor, the school is safer, more inclusive, and ready for 150 more years with students.
“Suddaby PS is a beautiful, historic multi-level building located in the Kitchener downtown area,” said Chris Greenhough, principal of the school. “Adding an elevator greatly enhances accessibility. The elevator allows all of our staff, students, and families to fully participate and engage in school events. The renovation promotes inclusivity and equity, transforming the space into one that serves the entire community.”
