On Friday, February 27, hundreds of our students competed in the 85th annual Cambridge Skating Races at Galt Arena Gardens – the oldest continuous running athletic event for school children in Canada. The arena was packed with cheering fans, from family members, to friends, to education staff!

As the friendly competition unfolded, a buzz of strategy chatter and laughter filled the air. Students, aged five to 12, geared up and took to the ice waiting for the clap of the starter block, a familiar sound that marks the beginning of each race and has been an important piece since the inaugural event. All participants had the opportunity to skate in individual or team races, regardless of ability; everyone left with a ribbon for their effort and courage!

This yearly tradition has been a widely popular event in the Galt community seeing generations of families participate, but the event wouldn’t be possible without the help and dedication of community volunteers, arena staff, student leaders and teachers.

Thank you to our 12 schools for the continued support and participation: Avenue Road Public School, Blair Road Public School, Central Public School, Chalmers Street Public School, Clemens Mill Public School, Elgin Street Public School, Highland Public School, Manchester Public School, Moffat Creek Public School, Saginaw Public School, Stewart Avenue Public School, and Tait Street Public School.

Let the races begin.

Teamwork at its finest!
