Grade 5 and 6 students in two Mary Johnston Public School classes participated in a worldwide teapot challenge they found on Twitter.
A package arrived at the school in January from Australia with the teapot inside. The goal of the challenge was to create a box that can hold a teapot and be shipped to another country without being damaged. A teapot is an odd shape that doesn’t easily to fit into a typical box; students were challenged to design something that can hold the teapot tightly.
During the design process, the classes connected with a school in Singapore, which is where the teapot is destined to travel next. They’ve been video chatting back and forth getting to know each other and learning about each country. Along with shipping the teapot, the students created fact sheets about Canada that will also be included – we think the students in Singapore will be able to figure out we love hockey!
On Thursday, March 5, the classes hosted a tea party for parents and family members to celebrate and explain their design concepts and show off their hard work. Every design was carefully thought out, taking into consideration weight, padding, shape and cost of shipping; they were all very unique and special! No two were the same.
At the end, the students had the opportunity to go around and vote on the winning prototype – congratulations to Siting and Tijana for being selected! Today, the two classes ship the package off to Singapore and look forward to hearing from their recipients when they return from March Break!
What a cool experience.
