Secondary Magnet ESL & ELD Programs
The ESL and ELD Magnet programs are for newcomer students who are Multilingual Language Learners (MLLs) learning English in Grades 9-12. The programs raise students’ skill development in English language and mathematics to support their progress in high school.
Students in the ESL (English as a Second Language) program have had age appropriate education in their home language(s).
Students in the ELD (English Literacy Development) program have had limited or interrupted educational opportunities in their home language(s).
Students are recommended for the ESL or ELD magnet programs by their Grade 8 school staff, or through an assessment at the WRDSB Welcome Centre for Newcomers before school registration. Secondary schools will refer newcomer families directly to the Welcome Centre.
