Support Models for MLLs in Elementary School (K-8)

Multilingual Language Learner Teacher (MLL) teacher

Each elementary school has an MLL teacher. They will offer newcomer students an initial assessment after they have registered for school. This will involve testing in:

  • Speaking
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Mathematics

This teacher will help connect your child and family to supports within the school or the community.

The MLL teacher may:

  • Support the classroom teacher with planning, assessment, and resources
  • Work with you child in the classroom
  • Work directly with your child in a small group

Students in elementary school who were born in Canada and speak another language at home may also benefit from a language assessment and language support.

Levels of Support

All MLL students will receive support in their classroom.

The classroom teacher and the MLL Support teacher work together on:

  • Planning
  • Instruction
  • Assessment

The MLL student’s progress with language proficiency is monitored using the STEP Framework. This guides the approach to instruction, assessment and the classroom environment.

Some students will receive small group support

The classroom teacher and the MLL support teacher work together on:

  • Direct instruction
  • Practice
  • Reinforcing language skills

Based on the student’s needs, tutorial support may be offered outside the classroom in a small group setting.

A few students will be in the ABLE Program for MLLs with Interrupted Formal Education

The Accelerated Basic Literacy Education (ABLE) program, is a half-day program for MLL students with interrupted formal education in Grades 5-8.  This intensive program is offered at designated sites and involves a central application process.

Students are placed in a homeroom and join the ABLE class for part of each day for language and math. They rejoin their homeroom for all other subject areas. The ABLE teacher and educational assistant (EA) work together with the classroom teachers to provide integrated classroom support.

Support Staff

Elementary classroom teachers work with MLL teachers to support multilingual

learners as they learn English and the Ontario curriculum at the same time.

Guidance Counselors help students in Grade 8 to select appropriate courses for secondary school, based on their strengths and needs as learners, and dependent on their postsecondary goals. They can also help students to access supports in the community.

School Settlement Workers help newcomer students and their families to become familiar with Canadian society and the education system by providing information, referral, orientation, and advocacy.

Interpreters can be provided to help you register for school and communicate with school staff.
