At the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB), we know teaching and curriculum are the foundation for student success. We also know that the spaces where students learn matter for their growth and development.

Design for Student Success is a monthly feature highlighting the different spaces across the WRDSB that help students learn, connect and grow independently.

From collaborative study areas to creative and innovative spaces, each featured element helps students succeed. The hard work of our Facility Services team shows our commitment to building a system where all students are provided with the opportunities to access their chosen pathway in learning and life.

Alpine Public School – Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Upgrade

Why it Shines

A major Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) upgrade at Alpine Public School is helping create a safer, healthier, and more comfortable learning space for students and staff.

Once completed, all classrooms at Alpine will be equipped with air conditioning, providing temperature-controlled learning and teaching environments for staff and students.

The new HVAC system uses energy-efficient heat pump technologies to reduce the school’s carbon footprint and decrease greenhouse gas emissions. It also includes upgraded digital temperature controls, improved fire protection and expanded electrical capacity for future needs.

“Having air-conditioning in our building will help us learn better,” said Bilan, a student at Alpine PS.

This project is ongoing and is expected to be completed in Spring 2026.

Northlake Woods Public School – Boiler And Chiller Plant Upgrades

Why it Shines

The new high-efficiency boiler and heat pump air conditioner upgrades at Northlake Woods Public School focus on modernizing the school’s climate control systems.

A phased installation was unique to this project, allowing the school to overhaul the core infrastructure without disrupting daily classroom activities. The resulting additional space has since been converted into additional storage space for the school.

With more precise temperature regulation, Northlake Woods is able to maintain a consistent, comfortable environment that helps students stay focused on learning. The new system also operates at high efficiency, leading to long-term operational savings and lower emissions.

“Proper heating and cooling of a school contribute to learning environments that support our board’s commitment to support learning for all,” said Rebecca Bearinger Fay, principal at Northlake Woods PS. “The installation of the new heating and cooling units, which are more efficient, was a collaborative undertaking by board staff, school staff, and vendors, and it was a great example of how working together can improve schools.”
