We want to congratulate Scott McKenzie on winning the 2018 Innovator Award for Classroom Educator.

Scott McKenzie is a Grade 3/4 teacher at New Dundee Public School. He strongly believes that all children should feel successful at school, and he utilizes technology to meet the needs of each and every student in his classroom.

This national award is presented annually by CONNECT – Canada’s largest educational technology conference – to recognize one outstanding educator who has developed innovative teaching and learning programs with a focus on improving student engagement and learning in the classroom.

In 2014, Scott connected his class to other classes in Cambridge, Mexico and Korea for a year long collaboration. They created a Global Classroom using Minecraft Servers, Google Sites and Google Hangouts. In 2015, his class connected with a local High School class to work on a passion project to help an endangered species, Little Brown Bats. They used technology to connect the two classes, and the Elementary students had the opportunity to work in the construction shop building the bat houses with High School mentors. And in 2016,  Scott worked with a team of teachers on a project integrating coding and robotics as tools to deepen student comprehension in Mathematics and Language from Grades 1-6.

“Scott is an innovative educator and leader who shares his passion for learning with everyone he meets”, said Becky Rouse, Consultant, Instructional Technology JK-8.“He inspires learners of all ages to innovate, create, explore and find their passion.”

Congratulations, Scott, on receiving this impressive honour. Your creative spirit helps us to foster a culture of innovation to help build students’ confidence and success as they face the future.
