This afternoon, at Ryerson Public School in Cambridge, the Ministry of Education announced $23 million dollars in capital funding for the Waterloo Region District School Board. The announcement, part of a $12 billion dollar investment from the province over 10 years, is to help build new schools in areas of high growth and to improve the learning conditions for students in existing schools.

Our Director of Education John Bryant was joined by Cambridge MPP Kathryn McGarry and Kitchener Centre MPP Daiene Vernile to announce the capital funding, along with Cambridge North Dumfries Trustee Cindy Watson.

“Providing our students with an engaging space to learn is essential to their achievement,” said John Bryant. “We know that to meet the diverse learning needs of our students means that each and every one of them must feel supported, not only in their academic work but supported in their overall well-being.”

Director Bryant continued, “Student achievement is at the forefront of everything we do, and that includes our capital priorities. The capital funding announced today allows us to build spaces that inspire the next generation of innovators and leaders. It is important that our schools are accessible for everyone, with classrooms built for all learners, complete with sound fields and seating that promotes collaboration and inclusion.

I am grateful to the Ministry of Education for their continued support and commitment to ensuring that schools in the Waterloo Region District School Board continue to be dynamic places to learn.”

The funding announced today includes:

  • An addition for 190 students to Cedar Creek Public School in Ayr
  • An addition for 199 students to Ryerson Public School in Cambridge
  • An addition for 138 students to Grand River Collegiate Institute in Kitchener
  • A new elementary school for 519 students in Southeast Galt
