The Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) broke ground on its newest elementary school on Monday to serve the Chicopee Hills community.

Trustees and staff together with BJC Architects Inc. and Tambro Construction were on-site to celebrate the momentous and long-awaited occasion. A special thank you to the Ontario Ministry of Education for their continued support and commitment to ensuring schools in the WRDSB continue to be dynamic places to learn.

“The community is growing and we are ready to have our school serve this community,” said LeeAnne Andriessen, the incoming principal, as she reflected on what the future has in store for the newest WRDSB addition.

The new school, located on Fairway Road in Kitchener, was named Chicopee Hills Public School in 2013. The name comes from the area in which the school is located, at the foot of the Chicopee ski hills, a geological formation which was created approximately 12,000 years ago by retreating glaciers.

With shovels officially in the ground, the school is scheduled to open in September 2017 and will serve approximately 650 students in Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8.
