It all started with a simple interest and a big mind for experimenting when three Grade 5 students from Millen Woods Public School began looking into the world of baking and recipes!

Caitlin, Lauren and Claire tested their own skills by baking a few recipes which they then shared the results with their classmates to collect feedback about the recipe. From there, the three students explored the baking industry further and made a connection with the owner of The Cake Box, Yvonne Zenser. The group was invited to come and have a 2-hour tour of The Cake Box facility, and learned much about the inner workings of a bakery – they even made a few cupcakes and other baked goodies that they brought back to their class! It was soon after their visit that Caitlin, Lauren and Claire sprang into action.

They talked about ways they could use their new found skill and interest to help others, and quickly came to a decision they would support SickKids by hosting a bake sale! With the help from family and friends, the group of three was able put together one awesome (and delicious) event based on the May the 4th Be With You Star Wars theme!

Buzz around the bake sale was generated through announcements, posters, visuals of ‘Wookie Cookies’ and ‘Princess Leia Cupcakes’ and even pretzel sticks turned into Light Sabers, that decorated the hallways of Millen Woods PS!

And ‘the icing on the cake’…The Cake Box donated 12 beautifully decorated cupcakes.

The May 4th event arrived and the bake sale was a galactic success – Caitlin, Lauren and Claire raised over $1000! The group was overwhelmed with the generosity of the Millen Woods PS students, staff and community. Everyone had a wonderful time and were in awe over the fabulous baked goods and creative cookies.

Caitlin, Lauren and Claire set out a goal of discovering an interest, turning it into a skill set to which they can use to help others, and presto, they have made a difference in the lives of SickKids patients and their families. What a wonderful contribution they have made to the SickKids Foundation.

Way to go Caitlin, Lauren and Claire and all the Mariners of Millen Woods PS who supported the event!
