The halls and classrooms at Trillium Public School were filled with the sounds of music, as the school participated in the nationally celebrated Music Monday, organized by The Coalition for Music Education! From the moment the school day started until the bell rang at 3:20 p.m., students and staff took part in many different music activities, both as a class and as a school.

“Music is something that doesn’t put limits on a person, any one can join along and interpret music their own way, with their own feelings. This is what’s special about this day and art form,” Trillium PS Music teacher Lynne McNab said, “one student was so excited for Music Monday that he ran up to me and said, ‘there are only 4 more sleeps’ – that’s incredible!”

Throughout the day, students picked music workshops to try, which focused on learning various instruments and music styles: dynamic dilemma cards, harmonica workshop, make a rainstick, ukulele workshop, musical scrabble, Garageband on the iPad, Zen Den meditative music, DrumFit, and musical science. Once their workshop rotation was done, the school gathered in the gym to listen to their boys and girls ensemble groups and sing O Canada along with their National Anthem choir. It was a wonderful opportunity for the students participating in the assembly to share their music talents with their fellow peers. But at noon, Trillium PS participated in a special musical moment – staff and students went outside and sang Music Monday’s anthem, ‘We Are One’ written by Canadian high school student Connor Ross, simultaneously with schools, community groups, musicians and artist across Canada.

But the day couldn’t be complete without a special guest. Nii Addico, Creation Africa‘s founder and African Drummer and Performer, performed and taught traditional African tribe music he grew up playing, spoke of the culture and invited students to try some of the instruments he brought in. The Trillium PS students were captivated by the stories he told and music he was sharing.

What an incredible day of music and sharing! Trillium PS students cannot wait for Music Monday 2016.
