The 2025-26 assessment results for the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) have recently been released by the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO).

Results in the WRDSB

The results of the 2025-2026 EQAO assessments showed that WRDSB student achievement remained largely consistent with last year, with some areas meeting or exceeding previous results and a few areas reporting slight decreases. These results reinforce the importance of continuing the work already underway through the Structured Literacy Multi-Year Plan, Math Achievement Action Plan and the entire Board Improvement and Equity Plan which focus on student achievement and well-being. 

The results of the assessments provide us with a valuable data set and helps us determine areas of focus. We are informed by the multiple data sets we collect to identify how we can best support student learning.

Comparing Our Results to the Previous School Year

Since the 2024-25 EQAO results:

  • WRDSB performance increased in:
    • Grade 6 writing and mathematics
  • WRDSB performance remained the same in:
    • Grade 3 writing 
    • Grade 6 reading 
    • Grade 9 mathematics
    • Grade 10 OSSLT for students writing the test for the first tim
  • WRDSB performed slightly below last year’s results in: 
    • Grade 3 reading and mathematics
    • Grade 10 OSSLT for students previously eligible to write the test

Supporting Student Learning

We remain committed to supporting the academic achievement and well-being of all students. The 2025-2026 EQAO results provide an opportunity to see the impact of the work already underway to support student learning, while also highlighting areas where we can continue to go deeper. 

The results reinforce the importance of continuing this work. We will remain focused on using data and evidence to guide our approach, strengthen the strategies already in place and ensure that students have the support they need to achieve their full potential. 

The efforts of staff, in collaboration with parents, families and caregivers, to implement key strategies such as the Structured Literacy Multi-Year Plan (SLMYP) and the Math Achievement Action Plan (MAAP), in support of reading, writing and mathematics learning mean that more students are experiencing success. 

The Structured Literacy Multi-Year Plan (SLMYP)

The WRDSB is supporting students in developing the language and literacy skills they need to support their academic achievement and well-being. The SLMYP takes a comprehensive approach designed to support students from Kindergarten to Grade 12, allowing student learning to continue seamlessly, year to year. It offers a framework of resources and strategies that allow educators to support students in accessing the learning opportunities they need to grow their reading and writing skills.

The Math Achievement Action Plan (MAAP)

We know that a strong foundational understanding of mathematics is an essential skill for all students. The latest EQAO results are just one measure that helps to illustrate the impact of our investments in professional development, key tools and enhanced resources as part of the MAAP. 

The WRDSB MAAP offers an enhanced approach to supporting math learning, building upon Ministry of Education expectations by offering a strategy for all students, and all schools, while providing access to additional resources for those who need them. Math facilitators and intervention teachers are supporting students’ individual learning needs, in collaboration with classroom educators. Access to digital learning platforms for students has engaged them as they’ve acquired key new math knowledge, propelling them on their learning journeys.

Investing in Continued Student Success in the WRDSB

The outcomes reflected in the 2025-2026 EQAO results reinforce our commitment to deepening the strategies that we have in place to continue to support students’ academic achievement. The WRDSB Strategic Spending Plan for 2025-26 and 2026-27 will allow additional investment in improved student outcomes in literacy and math, with a focus on further enhancing in-school supports who work directly with students and classroom educators.
