With the end of the 2023-24 school year just around the corner, we wanted to recognize some of the outstanding secondary students from across the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) for their incredible achievements. From incredible student leaders, and those who have demonstrated academic excellence, to all students who help to give a school its heart, we are so proud of every WRDSB student for all they contributed this school year.

Alternative Education
Xavier Chavarria
Xavier is studious and kind. He has a natural curiosity; he often asks peers “what’s your favourite tree?’ or “where would you like to travel?” and he genuinely wants to hear their answers. Many valuable class discussions have emerged from Xavier’s curiosity. This year Xavier’s been creating an eStore to sell his art pieces. He’ll soon be launching Magic Turtles Art. Rosemount staff congratulate him on his successful completion of the OSSD!
Ruth Gaetan
Ruth came to Alternative Education in the fall of the 2022-23 school year. Over the next year she started to attend more often, participate in school trips and activities, and earned credits through active participation in the program. She built relationships with staff and students, starting working a part-time job, and successfully switched to the SWAC program at Conestoga College. She has been accepted to a firefighting college program and is excited for what comes next.
Bluevale Collegiate Institute
Bree Olijnyk
Bree is an intelligent, humble, caring, creative, student-athlete. She plays high school basketball, rugby, alpine skiing, badminton, tennis and semi-pro soccer. She has been the main lead and creator of “Bluevale Gives Back;” an online platform of kindness that has snowballed to other schools. Bree was named BCI’s Valedictorian and has earned the Queen’s University Chancellor Scholarship. We wish Bree all the best in Engineering at Queen’s.
Eric Yoon
Eric is an empathetic, brilliant student who is incredibly well liked by his peers. He is one of our Co-Presidents, a member of the Electric Car Club raising over $10K in sponsorships, the Sir Isaac Newton Exam School Champion, on the DECA Executive, and Math Club leader. He has volunteered over 250 hours at Thrift on Kent. We wish Eric all the best as he goes to the University of Waterloo to study Computer Engineering.
Cameron Heights Collegiate Institute
Chloe Bogeart
Chloe is a stand-out Gael with her well-rounded accomplishments throughout her years at CHCI. Chloe has been a dedicated and spirited student council member for three years. She has also been a student leader both in her classes and through extra-curricular activities. She competed with the Robotics Team and was a three-season athlete each year in Cross Country, Nordic Ski, and Track, always bringing positivity to the teams.
Anupam Chettimada
Anupam one of the the innovative minds behind ReAlign, a web app for treating amblyopia, and Talkhappi, a gamified mental wellness chatbot. He has been featured in Forbes and on the Today Show, where he was featured for his impressive SXSW 2023 Student Startup. Anupam intends to pursue Engineering Science at the University of Toronto, where his enthusiasm for intellectual exploration and community involvement will undoubtedly continue to shine.
Hardit Singh
Hardit is this year’s recipient of the Governor General’s Academic Medal for top-achieving student and a diploma candidate in the International Baccalaureate program. Hardit was a research collaborator with University of Waterloo School of Optometry and founded Speculor (a low-cost teleophthalmology platform serving marginalized communities). Throughout his academics, he was also involved in athletics including tennis, badminton and the Nordic ski team.
Eastwood Collegiate Institute
Naomi Cubilla
Naomi is described as a responsible and dependable leader by Eastwood teachers. She is a member of the Integrated Arts Program majoring in visual art. As co-leader of ECI’s Asian Student Union, she was instrumental in planning this year’s Multicultural show, as well as sharing her food and culture with fellow students at ECI events. Those who work closely with Naomi acknowledge her kindness, positivity, appreciation of others and her ability to stay calm under stress.
Stefanja Ottier
Stefanja is an Integrated Arts Program member, double majoring in dance and Film Studies. Stef is credited with starting ECI’s student newspaper, The Eastwood Sun. As a leader, Stef has participated in the planning of prom, coordinated the “Books against Bullying” Fundraiser, and a human trafficking awareness assembly. Stefanja was also a Valedictorian nominee, winner of the France-Anne Sweeney “Making a Difference” award in Grade 11.
Elmira District Secondary School
Calum Crawford
Calum is a responsible student who approaches challenges with empathy and kindness, demonstrating wisdom beyond his years. He has been a member of the volleyball, basketball, and track and field teams. He will be attending the University of Guelph this fall to pursue a Bachelor of Commerce degree with an Accounting Co-op. Calum has been recruited to the Gryphons track and field team as a member of their throws squad.
Connor Jantzi
Connor was selected as a 2024 Schulich Leader at the University of Toronto, which comes with $120,000 in scholarship funding. Connor will be studying Engineering, and looks forward to combining this knowledge with a passion for entrepreneurship to become a Canadian innovation leader.
Jordyn Kelly
Jordyn demonstrates leadership through confidence, intelligence, compassion and above all, inclusivity. Jordyn went above and beyond working with the ACE class and was adored for her friendly demeanor and optimistic attitude. As Co-President, Jordyn took on any task assigned with a positive attitude, enthusiasm and integrity, and purposefully planned for inclusivity. She will study Environmental Engineering at the University of Guelph next year.
Megan Leonard
Megan was selected for the Queen’s Commitment Scholars Award, providing financial support of $48,000 in recognition of Megan’s demonstrated commitment to social justice at EDSS and community. Megan shared advice for other students looking to make a positive difference for those around them. “There are countless ways to get involved,” says Megan. “Joining clubs, creating safe spaces, volunteering or taking any kind of initiative that enhances inclusivity in your community.”
Forest Heights Collegiate Institute
Nathan Chau-Nguyen
Nathan was a member of the Student Council as well as the Safe, Caring, and Inclusive Schools and Chess clubs. As Captain of the wrestling team, he won many tournaments, was the CWOSSA champion, and had a successful run at the OFSAA Championship. Nathan will be entering the University of Waterloo Co-Op Mathematics program this fall, earning the President’s Scholarship of Distinction.
Amneet Sidhu
Amneet is a school co-president and an active member of the safe, caring and inclusive club. She has led a large variety of kindness activities throughout her high school career with the aim of encouraging prosocial behaviour among her fellow students. Amneet runs the Junior Leadership club, works hard to form connections and encourages junior students in the school to get involved. Amneet will be attending Wilfrid Laurier University in the fall for a Business Administration (BBA) program.
Galt Collegiate Institute
Faiza Bhula
Faiza is an empathic student who always helps others. She has been highly active in student activities while maintaining an impressive academic average. As part of the Women’s Alliance, she has spearheaded events like the shoebox project, collecting products for women in need. She elevates others with her positive attitude. Faiza will continue to make a positive impact on her community next year studying Criminal Justice and Public Policy at the University of Guelph.
Cole Miranda
Cole takes new challenges head on and welcomes opportunities to grow as a person and athlete. As a leader, Cole uses sports to create connections and he forges positive relationships ensuring an inclusive environment for all. Cole is a mentor who supports his peers in many ways, including through academic challenges and is known to engage with our more vulnerable learners. Cole will succeed in Recreation and Leisure, Sport Management at the University of Waterloo.
Glenview Park Secondary School
Faryal Ansari
Faryal is a driven and dedicated International Baccalaureate student. Her eloquent and insightful contributions to each of her classes made a positive difference in the learning of her peers. She was a member of the school newspaper, Premier at Fed Prov, chair of the Creative Writing and University Prep clubs, a WiSTEM ambassador, and on SAC. In the community, she volunteers at the Cambridge Idea Exchange and the KW Art Gallery. She will be attending McMaster University.
Quinn Hughes
Quinn is a conscientious student with a genuine care for learning. He is a natural leader, whose kindness and warm-hearted nature make him approachable and well-respected. He is committed to inclusivity and goes above and beyond to help those around him. Quinn’s acts of kindness include taking notice of and action on the needs of his peers, creating a welcoming environment for everyone. Quinn’s actions exemplify his exceptional character and dedication to others.
Grand River Collegiate Institute
Ellen George
Ellen’s exceptional achievements throughout high school include outstanding leadership in music ensembles, drama productions, clubs, Student Senate, and the GSA, providing a safe space for many students. Ellen’s numerous awards in art, English, music, and drama reflect their dedication and excellence. Ellen will attend Wilfrid Laurier University on a music scholarship.
Gurveer Kharyal
As Valedictorian and Legacy Award winner, he has excelled as Events Coordinator in Exec, contributed significantly to the community, and worked part-time throughout high school. A dedicated Air Cadet, he joined the STEM Club in Grade 10 and participated in the GRCI Reconciliation Club’s street name change initiative. Gurveer’s diverse interests also include cross-country, volleyball, peer tutoring, and theater.
Huron Heights Secondary School
Jehan Cameron
Jehan is an active and dedicated member of the Huron community. She has been an integral part of Huron People of Colour, track & field, yearbook, and the basketball team. Her commitment is matched by her dedication to her studies. Jehan leads her peers by example, motivating with a positive attitude and strong work ethic. Her ability to balance responsibilities while maintaining high standards in all her endeavours is honourable. Jehan is pursuing Engineering at McMaster University.
Claire Scott
Claire has been a leader and inclusive team member on the field hockey, hockey and rugby teams. Claire always plays with heart and leads her teammates by example. Claire works diligently in her courses and has excelled in academics, placing her on the Honour Roll each year. Through Leadership, Claire has welcomed new students with Husky Pack, promoted sports at Huron and volunteered at Special Olympics events. Claire will be attending Queen’s University in the fall.
Jacob Hespeler Secondary School
Jason Rudahusa
Jason is a student leader in all aspects of his life. He is captain of the Volleyball team, in addition to coaching both Volleyball and Track & Field at the school and club level. At JHSS, Jason runs the BSU and science club, and was chosen by his peers as their Valedictorian. He has also run a region-wide youth council for more than 3 years, centred around youth involvement, leadership and activism. Jason will attend Queen’s University in the fall.
Daniyah Siddiqui
Daniyah is a passionate student-leader. An honours student, she is co-president of Science Club and Asian Heritage Club, helped plan the WRDSB Asian Heritage Day and is a Loran Scholar Semi-finalist. Daniyah is a Shad alumni and works with them to promote STEM. Outside of school she volunteers with Cambridge Memorial Hospital, a local mosque, runs initiatives for young girls and tutors. In the fall Daniyah will study Medical Radiation at McMaster University.
Kitchener-Waterloo Collegiate Institute and Vocational School
Ricardo Guzman
Ricardo has enriched the school community with his leadership across various initiatives. Actively engaged in his community, he fosters inclusivity and extends support. His passion to help others permeates all endeavours. Ricardo plays a pivotal role in fostering a positive atmosphere within our KCI community, valuing peers’ perspectives and dedicating himself to assisting others. Elizabeth Pelletier
Liz, a dedicated student and athlete, adeptly juggles academics, sports, and a part-time job. She leads in KCI Salad Bar, KCI events, and fosters inclusivity. She is a leader in her community, helping young athletes find their confidence in athletics. With her caring demeanor, she ensures everyone feels heard and valued. Headed to the University of Ottawa for a double degree in Political Science and Common Law in French Immersion. A true asset to our One KCI community.
Laurel Heights Secondary School
Lily Balkos
Lily is a hardworking, thoughtful, and humble leader who has made a lasting impact on the school community. She dedicates countless hours to morning announcements and the Tech Crew where she runs sound and lighting for all events. Lily also makes meaningful relationships and always has people’s best interests at heart. Lily exhibits an exceptional level of maturity and insight for someone her age. We are excited to see the impact you make in the future!
Bayann Elmallah
Bayann is a strong leader and dedicated advocate at Laurel Heights who is committed to celebrating the strengths of all students. Bayann is incredibly kind, and works diligently to create inclusive experiences for all students, especially within our Special Education community. Bayann has made positive contributions to a variety of school activities. Bayann will certainly continue to create positive change and foster inclusion in the future.
Zander Li
Zander is a passionate and dedicated student, who has demonstrated particular skill when it comes to physics, mathematics and problem solving. Zander took home the best mark in the 2024 Sir Isaac Newton Physics Exam run by the Department of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Waterloo, finishing ahead of students around the world. This amazing accomplishment adds to an already impressive resume! Congratulations to Zander! His interest and passion for physics runs deep; he is seen outside Einstein’s house in this photo.
Preston High School
Lelia Faouk Al-Aadah
Lelia’s outstanding academics are matched by her school and community service. Her volunteerism included Chandler Mowat Community tutoring, Muslim Social Services Youth Program, Bingemans Ramadan Bazaar Planning committee, PHS Pre-Medical Club, Student Activities Council, among many others. Lelia’s list of accomplishments include the Francis Anne Sweeney and Community Volunteer Awards. She will attend the University of Guelph in the Arts & Sciences Program.
Ronak Patel
Ronak was selected as a 2024 Schulich Leader at the University of Waterloo, which comes with $120,000 in scholarship funding. Ronak is studying Software Engineering, and shared his guidance for students who are looking to reach similar goals. “I think the best advice that I can give is to be genuine in everything you do and really follow your passions,” said Ronak.
Owen Stevenson
Owen is an enthusiastic student, who was part of the PHS Student Activity Council, Athletic Council, Eco Club and Drama Council, as well as various sports such as rugby, swimming, football and volleyball. He is also a member of volleyball and football teams in the KW-Cambridge community. Owen completed his high school experience as a Student Council Co-President, highlighting his leadership prowess. Owen will be attending the University of Waterloo Kinesiology program.
Southwood Secondary School
Aliya Ghent
Aliya is an extraordinary student who embodies the values of integrity, perseverance, and excellence. She is a proven leader in her roles in Fed Prov, as Co-Prez, and as an athlete for the field hockey, soccer, badminton, volleyball and tennis teams. Her passion for leadership extends beyond the classroom, as she is on the Ayr 200 committee, celebrating her hometown’s 200th birthday. Aliya will attend the Business Administration program at Conestoga College.
Jack LeBlanc
Compassionate, inclusive and hard-working are some traits that Jack has exemplified as a Southwood student. He is an active leader in SAC, running spirit assemblies and dances and he has had an exceptional athletic career, playing volleyball, slo-pitch and basketball. Outside of school, Jack is the co-founder of JEM Auto Detailing in Ayr. Jack has received a $16,000 scholarship to attend the Business Administration (BBA) program at Wilfrid Laurier University.
Waterloo Collegiate Institute
Ernie Bae
Fuelled by his passion for environmental sustainability, Ernie founded and led the WCI Electric Vehicle Club. During WCI’s Walk for Hope, Ernie helped to raise $18,000. He participated in walking the 9,731 km distance from WCI’s campus to Syria, symbolizing a commitment to the reunification of a refugee family. As a student athlete and Co-Mayor, Ernie has been an incredible leader and teammate. Ernie has been accepted to the University of Waterloo.
Ella Maier
As co-chair of Relay for Life, Ella helped to raise $50,000 for cancer research. Her care and commitment supported a food drive between four WRDSB high schools creating over 25,000 meals. As a volunteer in her community, Ella cares for children and is employed at a summer camp. Ella is a leader in athletics as a captain and WCSSAA all star. She is a proud Co-Mayor at WCI. Ella will be attending the University of Waterloo.
Charlie Martinez
Charlie was selected as a National Scholar at the University of Toronto for the 2024-25 academic year. He will be studying in the Engineering Science program, and all expenses will be covered by the scholarship for the first four years.
Waterloo-Oxford District Secondary School
Charlotte English
Charlotte is deeply committed to learning about and creating social change. As a member of the Social Action Initiative for three years, she was an integral part of its campaigns promoting social justice issues. Charlotte identified Period Equity as a barrier in her school community and took action by collecting over 2,000 period products. Charlotte was a member of four music groups, as well as the co-chair for the W-O music council, which she led with passion.
Faith Sajithkumar
Faith is a remarkable graduate whose passion for addressing societal inequities and taking concrete steps to effect change have made a lasting impact on the school community. Her contributions include the creation of a school-wide breakfast program and being a leader in the school’s affinity group. Faith is known by all for her positive attitude, respectful nature and being a dependable student who always achieved high grades across all subjects.
