We have an important update about the fees associated with student participation in Waterloo County Secondary School Athletic Association (WCSSAA) sports.

Our Commitment to WRDSB Students

The Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) is committed to providing WRDSB students with an inclusive and equitable opportunity for students to participate in an interscholastic athletic program among its secondary schools that is:

  • Safe
  • Enjoyable
  • Competitive
  • Co-instructional

A key part of this commitment is ensuring that all students who want to take part in extracurricular sports, are offered the opportunity to do so.

The WRDSB recognizes that co-instructional athletic experiences create opportunities for students to build:

  • Leadership
  • Teamwork
  • Collaboration
  • Communication skills

We know that these contribute to the overall well-being and development of students. Our work through WCSSAA is a key component of this.

Updated WCSSAA Fee Structure

Following a careful review to estimate the total operational costs for all WCSSAA sports, fees will be increasing for all sports for the 2024-25 school year. This decision was made to ensure:

  • 100% cost recovery associated with offering these extracurricular sports opportunities for WRDSB secondary students
  • The long-term financial sustainability of offering WCSSAA sports for WRDSB students

This is the first update to the fees associated with WCSSAA sports since 2015. The next fee structure review will occur for the 2026-2027 school year.

Supporting Student Access to Sports

All students that want to participate in school sports will be able to, regardless of their financial resources. Guided by the Strategic Plan, WRDSB and WCSSAA recognize the importance of offering extracurricular sports opportunities for students, as they can play a critical role in promoting both physical and mental health.

We hope that this helps to provide greater transparency with the costs associated with offering WCSSAA sports for secondary students, and the exceptional value that participating in these opportunities provides.
