On Friday, September 23, students across the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) carried on Terry Fox’s message of hope and participated in the Terry Fox Run.

The Terry Fox Run is held in the fall each year to continue Terry Fox’s legacy and raise money for cancer research.

Here are just a few examples of how WRDSB students recognized the day:

  • To help raise awareness and build excitement for the run, students in Ms. Wamsley’s Grade 4/5 class at Franklin Public School organized a kick-off event for the whole school. The students created signs representing each province, so that classes could start their run from different parts of the country and run across Canada.

  • Students at Mackenzie King Public School were joined by special guests Laura Mae Lindo, MPP for Kitchener Centre, Councillor Scott Davey, and Chief of Police John Goodman for their Terry Fox Run. In total, the school community raised over $2000 for the Terry Fox Foundation! Students learned about how extraordinary Terry Fox was, and all the astounding things that he achieved.

  • Grade 4/5 students at Northlake Woods Public School gave a presentation on Terry Fox at their assembly, and Grade 7/8 students and school mascot Shadow led the school in a warm-up before the big run.

  • Silverheights Public School held its Terry Fox Run on October 6. To help boost fundraising efforts, Grade 7 student William Cooper sat in front of the entire school and had his long hair cut for the first time in three years – which was then donated to Wigs for Kids. William wanted to do this in honour of his grandfather, who passed away due to cancer. Overall, the school raised more than $1650!

A big thank you to everyone who volunteered, donated or participated in our schools’ Terry Fox Runs this year!
