Waterloo Education Foundation Inc. (WEFI) renews commitment to support student nutrition with $21,000 donation.
The Waterloo Education Foundation Inc. (WEFI) renewed their commitment to funding local organizations that support student nutrition programs. On Wednesday, December 15, the WEFI Board of Directors passed a motion to provide $21,000 to Food4Kids Waterloo Region, the May Court Club of Kitchener-Waterloo and Nutrition for Learning in January and February 2022.
“The ever-evolving COVID-19 pandemic has continued to impact the lives of all in Waterloo Region. We are proud to be able to, once again, support the work of these essential organizations and their efforts to address food insecurity,” said jeewan chanicka, president of WEFI. “Thank you to all of those from Food4Kids, the May Court Club and Nutrition for Learning who support our students and their families every day.”
These organizations were each selected to receive an equal portion of this funding. The service they provide to students and their families is instrumental in combating food insecurity in Waterloo Region.
“It is our honour to support the incredible work that Food4Kids, the May Court Club and Nutrition for Learning do in our schools every day,” said Scott Piatkowski, a member of the WEFI Board of Directors and Chair of the WRDSB Board of Trustees. “Thank you to everyone who chose to Give the Gift of WEFI this season, and helped us to continue to support these important community organizations.”
What this means for students in our community
Food4Kids, the May Court Club and Nutrition for Learning will be able to continue supplying students with direct nutritional support. For our students, this means they will continue to be able to focus on their learning, without having to worry about whether or not food for their lunch was available at home.
“WEFI makes a tremendous impact in the lives of students and families especially for those in our community who are in need,” said Matthew Gerard, treasurer and secretary of WEFI. “It is our hope that these funds will support local student nutrition programs as they help to make life a little brighter for students and their families.”
Measuring the impact
- Food4Kids served over 860 children in 2020-21 for the 40 weekends during the school year and provide daily support during the 84 days of school breaks
- The May Court Club of Kitchener-Waterloo can continue to provide emergency food boxes to over 125 schools in Waterloo Region
- Nutrition for Learning serves approximately 23,000 students every day in Waterloo Region
