Sandhills Public School students were able to learn more about Canada’a history first-hand from a visitor who will have a place in the Canadian history books forever.

Joan O’Malley, who sewed the first Canada Flag, along with the sewing machine she used, came to the school and shared her story. She also talked about our flag’s symbolism and what it means to Canada, as a nation, and to individuals.

The Flag Wavers of Waterloo Region organization and Councillor Bil Ioannidis were among the special guests. Students welcomed their special guests with the singing of O Canada and the Canadian Flag Waver song.

Sandhills PS students had the opportunity to ask Mrs. O’Malley questions and to learn about her special role in the history of our flag.

As a show of appreciation, Joan thanked the school for their participation in Heritage Canada’s O Canada project, and presented Vice-Principal Christine Hristov with an autographed book and flag. Mrs. Hristov made Mrs. O’Malley an official “Sandhills Sun” and gave her a school shirt.

A big thank you to Joan O’Malley and the Flag Wavers of Waterloo Region for taking time out of their tour of the Region to speak at Sandhills PS! It was a great learning experience and information students will be able to share with their families for years to come.
