For the third year in a row, Bluevale Collegiate Institute (BCI) has received the Gold Ontario EcoSchools Award.

According to Ontario EcoSchools’ Certification Guide, the gold award “indicates that a school has taken a comprehensive approach to implementing the EcoSchools program and has achieved significant results in each section of certification.”

“Visiting your school was a pleasure! You continue to engage and promote environmental awareness through your many projects and initiatives,” said one Ontario EcoSchool committee member. “BCI has completed another stellar year of increasing ecoliteracy through your school and greater community. Congratulations on a terrific year filled with many accomplishments.”

The EDGE club at BCI has done an amazing job at starting many different conservation programs, such as: the Energy Conservation Walkabout; the Terra Cycle campaigns; electronics, battery, and light bulb collection; school ground greening; securing Speak-Up Grants; curricular ties to environmental learning; the integration of various EcoSchools program requirements into the Life Skills classes and Environmental Science program; and waste minimization practices. The activities and events offered have been a great way for BCI students to get involved with and to learn about applying everyday environmental actions.

Congratulations to Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Mlynski for their relentless ongoing leadership in all of the BCI greening initiatives, to the Life Skills classes and EDGE club for leading the practical operations by example, and to the staff and students of BCI for making conscious decisions about their environmental footprint.
