Staff and students at Elgin Street Public School hosted, and organized a Canadian Citizenship ceremony for ten families. The school’s gym turned into a courtroom, and the library was decorated with Canadian art made by their students. There was no shortage of Canadian pride!

Grade 6 student, Ashley P., opened the ceremony by singing our national anthem, and what a beautiful job she did. Next, appearing in front of Citizenship Judge Larry Gravill, the ten families took the oath and gained the rights and responsibilities of being a Canadian citizen. To honour Canadian culture, the ceremony was conducted in both French and English.

Not only was it a special moment for these families, it was an educational experience for Elgin Street PS students in Grades 1-6, who were able to connect this experience with their social studies classes by witnessing and learning what it truly means to become a Canadian citizen.

In addition to the school students, many special guests were in attendance to welcome these new Canadian families: RCMP corporal Judy Falbo, Cambridge – North Dumfries MP Gary Goodyear, WW II Veteran Mr. Watts, City of Cambridge Mayor Doug Craig, WRDSB Superintendent Lila Reid, Trustee Cindy Watson, and Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario – Waterloo Region (ETFO-WR) Vice President Nancy Hutchinson.

It was a memorable opportunity for everyone at Elgin Street PS. A special thanks to Mr. Sorli and Mrs. Robinson for all of their help.

On behalf of the WRDSB, we would like to welcome our new Canadian family members to our amazing country and region!
