Reading fills the mind with imagination and knowledge, while also being an important part of everyday life – from reading instructions on a medicine bottle, to understanding road signs.

It is with this understanding that Manchester Public School‘s Literacy Committee wanted to help fill their school full of new books. In February 2015, the committee completed an Indigo Love of Reading Foundation Grant application with their focus on two main literacy projects: upgrading and provision for school and classroom libraries, and focus on materials for at-risk readers (ESL and boys).

On Thursday, May 21, Manchester PS was selected to be the recipients of an $84,000 grant from the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation – that is a lot of money that will go a LONG way!

The grant money will be spent over three years to benefit the entire school by fostering students’ interest in literacy, particularly reading, and provide support for writing programs. Currently, classroom libraries are funded completely by individual classroom teachers. The school plans to purchase non-fiction books, graphic novels, dual language books, as well as high interest-low vocabulary books to appeal to their boys’ needs and support first language development. It also includes a provision to supplement teaching resources that will further advance their growth in the area of inquiry learning.

Congratulations, Manchester PS and their Literacy Committee for your hard work and optimism!
