Many weeks ago, two Grade 8 students from Margaret Avenue Senior Public School, Sarah Elop and Melody Riad, approached staff, wanting to volunteer to put on a school talent show. At the same time, two more Grade 8 students, Natalia Emmerson and Evelyn Ysselstein, came forward wanting to support two of the school’s staff members battling cancer.

The four students came together and combined their ideas to create the school’s first ever Silent Auction and Talent Show, in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. They volunteered on school breaks, evenings and weekends leading up to the big day to plan, organize and run the event.

With the guidance of teacher Leanne Breckles, Evelyn and Natalia were able to secure a great deal of support from their school community, collecting 133 donated items for the silent auction.

The day of the event was very busy, but very rewarding! It began with a raffle of donated items, which was open to all of the school’s students. Then, their Life Skills class provided cookies and rice crispy squares for tuck shop sales later that evening. Once school was done for the day, the school was open to the Margaret Avenue Senior PS community to view the silent auction items in preparation for the Talent Show and Auction later on that evening.

Their leadership group, the M-Team, helped with all the little jobs that needed to be done to ensure that the Talent Show and Silent Auction ran smoothly. In addition, many talented students came forward to participate in the Talent Show, which included solo numbers, duets, and the Junior and Senior Maverick Bands. An excellent crowd from the community was in attendance to support all of their students that evening – it was a great feeling!

This event was created, organized, and implemented from start to finish by their students and is a great example of student initiative and leadership, in response to a heartfelt need to do whatever we can to support the elimination of cancer from our lives.

We are excited to announce that Margaret Avenue Senior PS and the Margaret Avenue community raised $6,000 for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation!

Teachers and Administration are incredibly proud of Natalia, Evelyn, Sarah, and Melody for their positive student voice and leadership at Margaret Avenue Senior PS and to the many students and staff for their support throughout this wonderful endeavour!

Congratulations, Mavericks!
