The Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) is committed to honouring and learning from the voices, contributions, and experiences of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples this month, and all year long.
In recognition of National Indigenous History Month in June and National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21, WRDSB staff gathered at the Education Centre on May 28 to commemorate these important dates with the raising of the Every Child Matters flag. The event offered an opportunity to learn about the past, deepen our understanding of the contemporary contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples and better understand our collective responsibilities moving forward.

During this event, staff heard performances from the Spirit Nation Singers, followed by reflections from Jean Becker, former associate vice-president of Indigenous Relations at the University of Waterloo. A ceremonial raising of the Every Child Matters flag served as a visible affirmation of our commitment to honouring and learning from the voices, contributions, and experiences of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples. The flag will be flown throughout June.
Chosen by WRDSB’s Indigenous Education Council (IEC), the Every Child Matters flag stands as an inclusive symbol for the diverse identities of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Peoples.
About the Every Child Matters Flag
The Every Child Matters flag represents an enduring commitment to reconciliation, acknowledging both the historical and present-day impacts of residential schools on Indigenous children and survivors.
The flag’s orange background represents the impact of the residential school system on Indigenous communities. The Eagle Feather is a sacred symbol for many Indigenous Peoples, and its inclusion on the flag recognizes and honours the children who were forced into residential schools.
The phrase “Every Child Matters” affirms the dignity of every child, particularly honouring those who were impacted by residential schools.
