Earlier today, we learned of a ruling regarding the case brought forward to the courts about what occurred at Alpine Public School. While the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) cannot comment on this ruling, Director of Education jeewan chanicka wanted to speak directly to the WRDSB community about our commitment to student safety.

“We are committed to addressing systemic racism and oppression in all its forms. We will continue to work to ensure the safety and well-being of all the students we serve,” said Director jeewan chanicka. “Our most earnest goal is that every parent can send their child to school knowing that they will be safe, loved, cared for and welcomed.”

We recognize that the news will impact each of our lives differently. For our African, Caribbean and Black (ACB), Indigenous and racialised staff and students the events are inducing, or exacerbating, trauma that already exists. In the coming days, we will share resources to support students, families and community members.
