“Resilience is the ability to recover from difficulties or change—to function as well as before and move forward. Many refer to this as “bouncing back” from challenges.” – Centre for Addiction and Mental Health
We all experience challenges or go through times of change. Learning how to cope in these situations will help kids manage their stress levels when they face these difficult times.
Stress is a normal part of everyday life for children and adults. It helps to motivate us and adds a positive challenge to life. However, too much stress can be counterproductive and overwhelming.
Why focus on children’s stress? Because too much stress:
- makes it more difficult for children to get along with others
- interferes with children’s ability to focus, think and ultimately learn
- has a profound effect on children’s physical, emotional and mental health
The Psychology Foundation of Canada has put together resources for parents and educators on how to help students develop resilience through positive stress management, problem solving and coping techniques. Learn more about how to help your child manage stress.
By helping children learn positive coping strategies to deal with stress, you can help build their resiliency and prevent stress from escalating to distress, anxiety and meltdowns.
