Whether you are a student or staff member, giving back to the greater school community has been an important part of the Bluevale Collegiate Institute (BCI) experience. Their long standing tradition of supporting the United Way Kitchener Waterloo & Area is just one of the ways BCI demonstrates exceptional social responsibility.

Each year, Dana Stanek, a teacher and United Way staff representative at BCI, encourages her coworkers to get involved by offering a prize draw to excite staff to donate. In addition, BCI principal Mark Hunniford, has personally been a long time United Way supporter, and saw an opportunity for his students to become United Way supporters as well.

With high school football being a big hit amongst his students, Mr. Hunniford came up with a fundraising initiative that could grab the attention of students. The BCI Student Council, along with their teacher Paul Moffatt, supported the idea and promoted the football game fundraiser to their peers. This year, the game featured the age-old Spirit of Waterloo rivalry, BCI vs. Waterloo Collegiate Institute (WCI). The result: a donation of $1,289 to the United Way.

On behalf of the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB), we thank the Bluevale Knights for their ongoing support, and would like to recognize their unbelievable generosity:

  • 2014 – $3,584
  • 2013 – $3,984
  • 2012 – $4,034

Way to go, BCI!
