Congratulations to Ms. Kirkley and her Grade 4/5 class from Williamsburg Public School for winning the Classroom Energy Diet Challenge, a cross-Canada challenge sponsored by National Geographic and Shell Canada that focused on promoting energy awareness. The class has received a cheque for $5,500 to help make their classroom and school more energy efficient.

From February 2 to April 28, 2015, classes had the opportunity to complete a number of energy-awareness challenges to earn points. Ms. Kirkley’s class completed 21 out of the possible 25 challenges, which earned them 302 points. The prize for that contest was done through a random draw against all schools that earned points in their points bracket – the Williamsburg PS class won $2,500 for that challenge.

However, their big achievement was winning first place in the national video contest, which awarded them another $2,500! The one minute video, called ‘Think Before You Waste,’ illustrates powerful pieces of information the class found when they searched for facts about how wasteful society is and how reducing, resusing, recycling would benefit the world. The class received  2,245 votes, winning first place in the elementary category.

The additional $500 came from a random prize draw for every school who participated in the Classroom Energy Diet Challenge in some way. Williamsburg PS is the first ever school to win all three prizes. Way to go, Rm 31! Thank you for helping make a greener planet.
