For more than 10 years, Queensmount Senior Public School has had a Random Act of Kindness (RAK) program supported by an anonymous community member.

The program encourages students to write down and submit whenever they receive or witness a RAK. Each week a name is drawn from the submission box and the class that the student is in receives a small prize in the spirit that a RAK always comes back. Three times a year one class will win a “go anywhere-do anything” class trip, and typically classes choose a movie or Laserquest.

However, in the fall, Mrs. Ioannidis and her grade eight class won the “do anything-go anywhere” day trip and chose to give back to the community. The class spent the day volunteering at a thrift store called Thrift on Kent, run by the Mennonite Central Committee. On the way, they stopped at Sobey’s and purchased canned goods to donate.

The staff at Queensmount PS have been extremely impressed by their students true understanding of “a RAK comes back” and the idea of paying it forward.
