In honour of the hard work and support towards Free the Children, Grand River Collegiate Institute (GRCI) was selected to host this area’s Free the Children Empowerment Tour.

The tour celebrates women’s empowerment and shares stories of Kenyan women and students whose lives have been affected by the fundraising efforts of schools in North America.

Students and staff from GRCI’s Me to We Club, Grade 12 World Issues and Grade 10 Civics classes, along with a few student executives had the opportunity to hear Robin Wiszowaty (bestselling author and Free The Children’s Country Director for Kenya and Ghana), Mama Helen (who is involved with the Free the Children Kenyan artisans program and have experienced empowerment and financial independence, as they build a better future for their families) and two Kisaruni and Oleleshwa All Girl’s Secondary School students (who talk first hand about how new educational and leadership opportunities are transforming their lives) talk about their own personal empowerment stories.

This tour has given these ladies the opportunity to further their leadership and english-speaking skills and allowed them to become an inspiration to many. They will return to their communities to share their experiences with a whole new outlook on the world, continuing to empower others around them.
