Supporting the health and well-being of our staff and students is a priority for the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB). Helping staff establish healthy boundaries between work and home is a key part of this commitment. When we prioritize mental health, we strengthen our collective ability to support students effectively.

As part of a strategy to support and encourage all Ontarians in achieving greater work-life balance, the province passed the Working for Workers Act in December 2021. In line with that, WRDSB has developed the Disconnecting from Work Protocol which:

  • Sets guidelines for employees’ availability
    • For example, when they are available to respond to emails
  • Supports a positive shift in our organizational culture

WRDSB also values and has set expectations for respectful dialogue. These are outlined in the process for addressing concerns.

Communicating with WRDSB Staff

We recognize that open and responsive communication is important. To support this, connecting with staff during regular work hours, Monday to Friday is encouraged. While you are welcome to send emails or messages after hours, staff are encouraged to respond during their normal working hours. This helps them to maintain time with their families and other important relationships. Please understand that immediate responses may not be possible, as staff are often teaching or supervising students throughout the day.

There may be times during the year when staff will connect outside regular hours, such as:

  • Parent, family and caregiver meetings with teachers
  • Previously agreed to meetings

However, they are not expected to respond to emails or messages into the evening or on weekends.

This is one of several strategies WRDSB is employing to support the health and well-being of our employees. A healthy, family-friendly workforce positively impacts your school community and your child’s experience. We are committed to supporting your child socially, emotionally, and academically. Working together is essential to achieving this goal.
