Grade 5 students at Lincoln Heights Public School took part in the week-long Cycling Smarts Pilot Program. It is a hands-on cycling education initiative that helps students learn how to ride safely and confidently in an urban environment. Through a combination of classroom learning and on-bike practice, students developed important skills such as road safety awareness, navigating intersections, and understanding the rules of the road.
The program welcomed students of all experience levels, including several who learned to ride a bike for the first time. Throughout the week, students gained confidence, independence, and a greater understanding of how to travel safely alongside other road users. The excitement and enthusiasm from students highlighted the positive impact of providing accessible cycling education opportunities.

For Lincoln Heights staff, the program offered more than cycling instruction. It encouraged active transportation, healthy habits, and a stronger connection to the community. By helping students understand how to safely share roads and trails, the Cycling Smarts Pilot Program is equipping youth with practical skills they can use for years to come.
We are thankful to the many community partners who helped bring this program to Lincoln Heights Public School. Through the support of the City of Waterloo, Student Transportation Services of Waterloo Region, the Waterloo Catholic District School Board, and The Working Centre, students had hands‑on opportunities to build safety awareness, gain confidence in their abilities, and experience the benefits of active transportation. Together, these partnerships are helping create meaningful learning experiences that support student success both inside and beyond the classroom.
