We want to congratulate Martha (Marty) Deacon on her appointment this week to the Canadian Senate. Marty is a longtime educator in our district working as a teacher, principal and superintendent. She is also an advocate for amateur sports and serves as the director of the Canadian Olympic Committee and Commonwealth Games.

Marty is very honoured and humbled to be selected by Prime Minister Trudeau to serve in the Senate.

Serving my community, my province, my country has always been a high priority for me. I have enjoyed my career in education and sport and look forward to tackling the challenges and opportunities in Canada,” she said when we spoke to her about the news yesterday.

Marty hopes that in her new appointment she will be able to inspire, influence and inform on national issues. As a senator, Marty’s goal is “ensuring all Canadians are physically and mentally healthy, safe and happy. This work will be complex, I am hopeful that I can contribute to a bright future for all Canadians.”

Marty is the first senator from the Region of Waterloo to be appointed since 1941. We are all very happy for her and wish her the best of luck in her new role.
