On May 26th, students from St. Jacobs PS were special guests at the official opening of the 20th Anniversary of the Quilt & Fibre Art Festival in St. Jacobs.

After special guest The Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, OC, OOnt, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario entered with the rest of the official party, students sang O Canada, and Canadian Flag Waver, a song created to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Canada’s flag. It was fitting to celebrate Canada’s flag at the quilt festival, as Joan O’Malley, who sewed Canada’s first new flag in 1964. was a special guest at the festival and spoke of her role creating Canada’s new flag.

Joan autographed a Canadian flag and presented it to principal Kathy Mathers to thank students and St. Jacobs PS for taking part in the celebration. After the official opening, students had a chance to view the quilts on display as well as Joan’s Singer sewing machine that she used to stitch the new flag.

Principal Mathers wasn’t the only one to receive an autograph that day, students also had a chance to meet Lieutenant Governor, The Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, who autographed mini flags for each student.

Thank you to the organizers of the Quilt & Fibre Art Show for including St. Jacobs PS students in this special event!
