Speech and Hearing Month is a time to raise awareness and celebrate the excellent work of the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB), Speech-Language Pathologists (SLP), and Communicative Disorders Assistants (CDA). Every day, SLPs and CDAs help WRDSB students communicate and engage in learning.

Supporting Students

In the WRDSB, SLPs and CDAs support students in Kindergarten to Grade 2 with a range of oral communication needs. Effective communication skills support students in:

  • Accessing the curriculum
  • Participating in school and engaging in social relationships
  • Reading

All schools have access to Speech-Language Pathology Services, with elementary schools assigned an SLP. Additionally, SLPs and CDAs offer support to students with varied and complex needs. These services are responsive to students with different communication skills, including those who are beginning to communicate.

In the WRDSB, Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) and Communicative Disorders Assistants (CDAs) wholeheartedly support reading and writing, recognizing them as fundamental pillars of effective communication and essential skills for academic success.
