Congratulations to Dr. Graham Shantz on his new role as Director of Education at the Avon Maitland District School Board (AMDSB). Graham first joined WRDSB as a teacher in 1997, and in the 26 years since has served as a Principal, Executive Officer, Superintendent of Student Achievement and Well-being, Coordinating Superintendent and most recently, Associate Director.

As Associate Director, Graham led the work of:

  • Facility Services
  • Financial Services
  • Human Resource & Equity Services
  • Information Technology Services
  • Planning Department

Throughout, Graham worked closely with staff throughout the organization to create innovative solutions that centre student learning and voice. Student achievement was at the core of his focus throughout his recent work to lead changes in hiring practices that recognize lived experience, transform the physical spaces in schools into more accessible environments, and modernize the IT infrastructure and promote innovative technology advancements.

“I will so miss the countless dedicated colleagues I have had the chance to work alongside during my time at WRDSB,” said Shantz. “I will take with me the focus, care and attention that people throughout this organization brought to their work in support of student achievement and well-being, each and every day.”

“We will all miss Graham’s vast knowledge, expertise and guidance as part of Leadership Council,” said jeewan chanicka, director of education for the WRDSB. “I know I speak for everyone who has had the chance to work with Graham when I say that we wish him and his family nothing but the best as he embarks upon his new role. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for all his leadership and support to WRDSB over his many years of service.”

We appreciate the time, talent and leadership Graham shared with all of us during his 26 years as part of WRDSB and wish him every success as he takes the next step in his career. Graham’s last day will be on May 21.
