In a national search of 82 elementary schools, Sandhills Public School and King Edward Public School were chosen to represent the WRDSB as part of the largest recording of ‘O Canada’ to date. The initiative is to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Flag of Canada.
The Hometown Music Council, a not-for-profit organization with funding from Canadian Heritage, is visiting elementary schools across Canada. During the tour, the organization will record more than 25,000 students and raise awareness of the history of our country’s flag. Along with the national anthem recording, a few students from the selected schools are being interviewed to give background history on the cities they live in and what it means for them to be Canadian.
Our students sang with their hearts and Canadian pride. Each school decided to decorate and celebrate the day in different ways. Sandhills PS designed t-shirts and created posters, while King Edward PS made a big Canada flag with hand prints and illustrated blocks of Canadian symbols.
After each school performed, Hometown Music presented Sandhills PS and King Edward PS, and Kitchener City Councillors Bil Ioannidis and Sarah Marsh, a plaque as a special recognition and ‘Thank You’ for participating – there is no doubt each school will be proudly displaying this in their foyer.
This has been an amazing opportunity for our students and staff. Please take a moment to congratulate them on being a part of Canadian history via Twitter, @shlwrdsb and @kedwrdsb.
