Research shows that when families are engaged in their child’s learning, they perform better. If we want to support and improve student achievement and well-being, there must be a strong relationship with the families we serve.
Engaging with Families and Caregivers
To successfully increase parent and caregiver engagement, current policies and procedures need to be updated, in addition to other future considerations.
Amendment in School Council Handbook
For the WRDSB to build a more consultative relationship with the Parent Involvement Committee (PIC), an amendment to the School Council Handbook needs to be made. The amendment will clearly outline the nature of this relationship and the extent to which input is considered by the WRDSB.
Amendment in G300 – Policy Development and Reviews
As policies get developed and reviewed by the Board of Trustees it is important to explicitly involve the consultation of parents and caregivers in the process. They must be included before finalizing policies or implementing programs. An amendment in G300 – Policy Development and Review would codify engagement as part of an inclusive process to create and refine policy on student education.
Standardize Inclusive Best-Practices for Engagement with Families and Caregivers
We recognize the need for a protocol that outlines best practices for engagement with families and caregivers. One that includes:
- Accessibility accommodations and trauma-informed care
- Actions to overcome barriers in engagement
- Best practices on outreach
- Language and communication considerations
This protocol will be used as a standard for engagement with families and caregivers in the community. This will ensure every parent and caregiver interacting with the WRDSB experiences inclusive engagement.
