Everyday, great things are happening in our schools all across the region!

Here are just a few examples of what’s happening in our schools:

Citizenship Ceremony at Abraham Erb PS
On April 25, Abraham Erb PS will host a citizenship ceremony at the school. All grade 4, 5 and 6 students are invited to participate in the ceremony and will witness community members become new Canadian citizens!

WRDSB Early Learning Team Wins Provincial Award
The Early Learning Team at the WRDSB, together with the Early Learning Team from the WCDSB and The Region of Waterloo, are recipients of the Ontario Municipal Social Services Association (OMSSA) Local Municipal Champion Award.  The Local Municipal Champion Award is a peer nominated award, that recognizes the great work being done across the province. The Early Learning Team will receive the award and make a presentation at the OMSSA Learning Symposium that will take place in June. Congratulations to our Early Learning Team!

GCI Teacher Wins Provincial Award
Congratulations to Barbara Shatkosky, recipient of the Ontario Business Educator’s Association Award of Merit! Thank you for your dedication and contribution to Business Education in the WRDSB!

WRDSB United Way Campaign a Success!
Congratulations to everyone involved in the United Way Campaign. This year, the WRDSB raised $120,000! The money will go to supporting various resources and programs in the region. Congratulations!

Westheights PS Students Participate in Exchange Program
Westheights PS welcomed a group of Japanese students to their school at the end of March, as part of an exchange program. The exchange program, organized by Toyota, brought four students and a translator to the school for a tour, lunch and a chance to sit in on some classes. Last year, students from Westheights who play for the Jr. Rangers minor bantam team, visited Japan as part of the program.

Students Writing Published
Students in an enrichment program participated in a Canadian writing program, through Polar Expressions Publishing. 20 students have been selected to be published in the categories of poetry and story writing! Thousands of entries were received, and approximately 25% of students were chosen to be published. Awards of merit will be given to the newly published authors in June. Way to go!

Franklin PS Math Night a Success!
The seventh annual Math Night at Franklin PS was a huge success! 600 parents and students attended the event to play and learn Math related games. Learning can be fun!

Floradale PS Celebrates Nutrition for Learning
The school celebrated their partnership with Nutrition for Learning with a school-wide pancake breakfast! Staff and program volunteers served over 300 people a pancake breakfast, complete with sausage, milk and fruit for a healthy start to their day. Financial contributions to this event and the breakfast program at the school were made by Quarry Integrated Communications and the Kiwanis Club of Elmira, the Elmira Maple Syrup Committee, Crossroads restaurant and parents/guardians in the school community.

Sunnyside PS Art Show a Success
Grade 8 students from Sunnyside PS exhibited their artwork in a show called “Our Thoughts”. The works were based on the students perspective of important teen and world issues, with a negative or positive outlook.  Over 90 original works were shown at the Stanley Park Community Centre.
