Have you ever wondered how books and other materials end up in our school libraries?

Our library teams follow a set of guidelines to help select materials for our school libraries. They also review existing materials in a process known as ‘weeding’ to see what could be pulled to make space for new materials. As an example, our library teams may remove outdated materials because they are inaccurate (ex. a book may refer to Canada’s two territories if it was published before Nunavut became a territory) or outdated (kids just aren’t interested in reading about Spice Girls anymore).

It’s a complicated process, but we’ve done our best to simplify it:

If you’d like to learn more, you can review the WRDSB Selection of Educational Resources Procedure on our Library Ethics and Principles page.
