October is Islamic History Month. It gives us an opportunity to learn about the diversity of people who follow the Islamic faith, recognize their contributions, and honour the rich history of Islam.

In October 2007, the Government of Canada designated October as Islamic History Month (IHM) to highlight the role that Muslim communities play in Canadian society.

Learn more about Islam and Muslims

Muslims are ethnically diverse and represent many interpretations of Islam. They come from and represent all six continents. As a school system, we need to recognize this and be aware of this diversity when teaching about Muslim identities, stories and realities

Acts of islamophobia continue against Muslim communities in our Region. It is critical that we engage in deeper learning and explore Islamic culture. Doing this will create safer, caring, more inclusive learning environments for Muslim students.

While October is Islamic Heritage Month, we want you to honour Muslim identities all year.
