Today, April 22, the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) celebrates Earth Day. Every year more than a billion people recognize Earth Day around the world. It is a day of action to change human behavior and create global, national, and local policy changes.

The environmental stewardship we are challenged to uphold every Earth Day reflects long-held wisdom taught to us by First Nations, Metis and Inuit peoples who have always been stewards of the land and water and who have always recognized a deep and reciprocal relationship with the environment.

WRDSB Recognized for its Microforesting Efforts

Recently, Sustainable Waterloo Region (SWR) recognized the WRDSB with a Sustainability Breakthrough award. This award is in recognition of our microforesting efforts at Avenue Road Public School and Manchester Public School in Cambridge.

In November 2021, volunteers came together to plant 170 trees at the two schools. The work was part of a pilot program led by SWR that aims to plant microforests across the region.

Get Involved

This year we challenge all students and staff to participate in Earth Day and share their actions. This day is a great time to spark further discussion and interest in planet earth and sustainability.

There are many ways you can recognize Earth Day, such as:

  • Identifying various species of plants and animals around your home or neighborhood (iNaturalist App is good to track local species).
  • Calculating your Greenhouse Gas footprint using Project Neutrals calculator.
  • Learning more from and through Indigenous ways of knowing.

Share Your Earth Day Actions

We want to hear from you! Please tag us in your Earth Day social posts on Twitter at @WRDSB and Instagram at @wr_dsb and use the hashtag #EarthDay so we can share and celebrate Waterloo Region District School Board’s total impact!
