At the virtual annual general meeting for the Waterloo Education Foundation Inc. (WEFI) on Wednesday, March 3, the WEFI Board of Directors passed a motion to provide $30,000 to help local organizations supporting student nutrition in Waterloo Region throughout the months of June, July and August in 2021.

Nutrition for Learning and Food4Kids Waterloo Region were each selected to receive an equal portion of this funding. The service they provide to our students and their families is instrumental in combating food insecurity in Waterloo Region.

“As the challenges of the pandemic continue, the work of these organizations to address food insecurity for students in Waterloo Region only becomes more critical,” said John Bryant, president of WEFI. “I want to express my sincere gratitude to the Board of Directors for their dedication to supporting the important work of Nutrition for Learning and Food4Kids Waterloo Region.”

Matthew Gerard, treasurer and secretary of WEFI, echoed this sentiment, adding that “in this already challenging time, ensuring students have enough to eat is something we are happy to be able to support. We hope this donation provides a measure of relief for students and families in Waterloo Region.”

“I am so proud to have the opportunity to support the ongoing efforts of Nutrition for Learning and Food4Kids Waterloo Region,” said Joanne Weston, a member of the WEFI Board of Directors and Chairperson of the WRDSB Board of Trustees. “Thank you to all of our past, current, and future donors who help us to continue to support these important community organizations.”

What this means for students in our community

  • The Nutrition for Learning Summer Pop Up program will be able to continue supplying food directly to students and their families throughout the summer at locations throughout Waterloo Region
  • Food4Kids Waterloo Region will be able to support 755 WRDSB students and their siblings by delivering fresh fruit, vegetables and grocery cards directly to their homes on a weekly basis over the summer
