Update – January 29, 2013

At the January 21, 2013 Committee of the Whole meeting, Trustees approved the following recommendation:
That the Waterloo Region District School  Board approve extending a boundary  change option, originally approved on June 27, 2011 as detailed in Appendix A attached to this report dated, January 21, 2013, to those Senior Kindergarten to Grade 8 students living in the affected areas as illustrated in Appendix A Figures 1, 2, and 3 attached to this report, dated January 21, 2013, that would allow them the option to transition to their new school for the 2013/14 school year; and
That transportation be extended to those Senior Kindergarten to Grade 8 students choosing to attend their new school for the 2013/14 school year, based on transportation eligibility. 

Final approval of these recommendations took place at the Board Meeting on January 28, 2013.

Please note that parents of students at the affected schools (Breslau and Mackenzie King Public Schools) will be informed of the change to the approved Accommodation Review motion by flyers distributed via the schools. The flyer will also contain an invitation to a public open house on Tuesday, February 12, 2013 from 7:00 – 8:30 pm at Mackenzie King P.S. where families can discuss the personal implications of the changes with Board staff.

Breslau P.S./Mackenzie King P.S. boundary change

  • 2013/2014 – early registration for Junior Kindergarten
    • Students entering Junior Kindergarten in September 2013 in the affected area will be given the option to enroll at either Mackenzie King P.S. or Breslau P.S. during the 2013/14 school year – transportation will be provided to either school based on the Board’s eligibility criteria
  • 2014/15
    • Effective September 2014, Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6 students in the affected area will be in the Mackenzie King P.S. boundary.  Mackenzie King P.S. is located at 51 Natchez Rd, Kitchener
    • Students entering Grade 6 in September 2014 in the affected area will be given the option to enroll at either Mackenzie King P.S. or Breslau P.S. during the 2014/15 school year – transportation will be provided to either school based on the Board’s eligibility criteria
  • 2015/16
    • Full implementation of the new boundaries in effect

Smithson P.S./Mackenzie King P.S. boundary change

    • Effective September 2014, Grade 7 students in the affected area will be in the Stanley Park P.S. boundary.  Stanley Park P.S. is located at 191 Hickson Dr., Kitchener
  • 2015/16 – Grades 7 and 8
    • Effective September 2015, Grades 7 and 8 students in the affected area will be in the Stanley Park P.S. boundary.

UPDATE JUNE 20, 2011: RECOMMENDATIONS TO IMPLEMENT SCENARIO 1 APPROVED BY BOARD

At the Committee of the Whole Meeting, held on Monday June 20, 2011, the Board approved the following recommendations regarding the Breslau/Stanley Park Elementary Schools Pupil Accommodation Review (these recommendations received final approval at the June 27, 2011 Board Meeting):

Moved by K. Smith, seconded by M. Johnston

That the Waterloo Region District School Board approve an addition of approximately 118 pupil places and renovations at Breslau P.S. at an estimated cost of $2.6M, to tentatively be completed for September 2013, subject to and contingent on obtaining Ministry of Education funding;

That the Waterloo Region District School Board approve an addition of approximately 193 pupil places and renovations at Mackenzie King P.S. at an estimated cost of $3.3M, to tentatively be completed for September 2014, subject to and contingent on obtaining Ministry of Education funding;

That the Waterloo Region District School Board support the expenditure of approximately $120,000 from the 2013/14 School Renewal budget to undertake improvements to the site, which includes improvements to the parking lot, at Smithson P.S., to be completed prior to September 2014;

And that the Waterloo Region District School Board approve the boundary change between Breslau P.S. and Mackenzie King P.S., as illustrated on Appendix A, Figure 2 attached to this report, dated June 20, 2011, effective September 2014;

And that students entering Junior Kindergarten in September 2013 in the affected area, as illustrated on Appendix A, Figure 2attached to this report, dated June 20, 2011, be given the option to enroll at either Mackenzie King P.S. or Breslau P.S. during the 2013/14 school year;

And that transportation be extended to those Junior Kindergarten students choosing to attend Mackenzie King P.S. for the 2013/14 school year based on transportation eligibility;

And that students entering Grades 6 in September 2014 in the affected area, as illustrated onAppendix A, Figure 2 attached to this report, dated June 20, 2011, be given the option to enroll at either Mackenzie King P.S. or Breslau P.S. during the 2014/15 school year;

And that transportation be extended to those Grade 6 students choosing to attend Breslau P.S. for the 2014/15 school year based on transportation eligibility, effective September 2014 to June 2015;

And that the Waterloo Region District School Board approve the boundary change between Mackenzie King P.S. and Smithson P.S., as illustrated on Appendix A, Figure 3 attached to this report, dated June 20, 2011, effective September 2014;

And that students entering Junior Kindergarten in September 2013 in the affected area, as illustrated on Appendix A, Figure 3  attached to this report, dated June 20, 2011, be given the option to enroll at either Mackenzie King P.S. or Smithson P.S. during the 2013/14 school year;

And that transportation be extended to those Junior Kindergarten students choosing to attend Smithson P.S. for the 2013/14 school year based on transportation eligibility;

And that students entering Grades 6 in September 2014 in the affected area, as illustrated onAppendix A, Figure 3  attached to this report, dated June 20, 2011, be given the option to enroll at either Mackenzie King P.S. or Smithson P.S. during the 2014/15 school year;

And that transportation be extended to those Grade 6 students choosing to attend Mackenzie King P.S. for the 2014/15 school year based on transportation eligibility, effective September 2014 to June 2015;

And that the Waterloo Region District School Board approve the Grade 7 and Grade 8 boundary change between Stanley Park P.S. and Breslau P.S. as illustrated on Appendix A, Figure 4 attached to this report, dated June 20, 2011, effective September 2014 for Grade 7 and September 2015 for Grades 7 and 8;

And that the dates cited in these recommendations be open for adjustment should Ministry approvals and funding not correspond to the timing established in this report, dated June 20, 2011.

MAY 25, 2011

Following the presentation of the Breslau/Stanley Park ARC Accommodation Report to the Board on April 18, 2011, questions were raised relative to the costs associated with the energy consumption and transportation costs for the two scenarios (Scenario 1 and 2) presented in the ARC Accommodation Report. On May 25, 2011, a memo was sent to Trustees clarifying these costs.
