At the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB), we know teaching and curriculum are the foundation for student success. We also know that the spaces where students learn matter for their growth and development.

That is why this monthly feature will highlight the different spaces across the WRDSB that help students learn, connect and grow independently.

From collaborative study areas to creative and innovative spaces, each featured element helps students succeed. The hard work of our Facility Services team shows our commitment to building a system where all students are provided with the opportunities to access their chosen pathway in learning and life.

Crestview Public School

Why it Shines

Crestview Public School’s renovation improved several key areas, including the main entrance, office, lobby, staff workspaces, and meeting rooms. These updates have provided a more accessible, welcoming, and functional environment for students, staff, and visitors.

Additionally, the project introduced a dedicated health room and a new barrier-free washroom, which enhance support for student well-being and improve accessibility for the entire school community.

“The renovation has completely transformed our main office into a bright, welcoming space that sets a beautiful tone for our school. One of our favourite changes is being able to look out the windows, watch our students and families arrive, and greet them as they walk in. While we’re still awaiting a few final finishing touches, this upgrade gives our school the professional, warm front door our community deserves, and we are deeply grateful to the school board for making it possible,” said Sherri Davidson, Principal at Crestview Public School.

Courtland Senior Public School

Why it Shines

The revitalization project at Courtland Senior Public School focused on enhancing safety, accessibility, and functionality throughout the school grounds. Upgrades to the parking lot have established a more organized one-way traffic flow, with designated areas for buses and student drop-offs. The parking lot updates include barrier-free spaces, electric vehicle charging stations, and bike racks.

The updates to the outdoor recreation areas included a regraded rear tarmac area to create a larger, level basketball court, complete with game line markings. A new concrete barrier-free switchback ramp will also provide an accessible pathway to the lower field, alongside a newly constructed staircase leading to a repaved lower basketball court. To finish the transformation, new sod and trees were added, bringing greenery and shade to the site.

“When we upgrade our school environment, we tell our students that they matter and that their school is a place to be proud of. This renewed space gives our students a safe, inclusive space for connection and play, boosting their well-being and instilling a deep sense of pride in their school community every time they step outside”, says Siobhan O’Neill-Shonk, Principal at Courtland Senior Public School.
