Earlier this school year, Ayr Public School created a quilt focused on Truth and Reconciliation to display at the North Dumfries School Fair. 

To make the quilt, each student designed a square that represented their understanding of truth, reconciliation, and the importance of empathy and respect toward others. Some students included meaningful symbols such as hearts, feathers, or the sun to symbolize hope and healing, while others used words and colours to express unity and belonging.

Students took time to talk, listen, and reflect on what reconciliation means in Canada today. Through stories, art, and discussions, they learned about Indigenous histories, the lasting impact of residential schools, and the importance of truth-telling. They also furthered their understanding that reconciliation is not something we learn about once a year, but is instead a continuing promise to listen, learn, and take action in our daily lives.

For the staff, the project reinforced the importance of ensuring every child feels safe, included, and represented. 

Now proudly displayed at Ayr Public School, the quilt stands as a reminder of their shared commitment to Truth and Reconciliation.
