At the virtual annual general meeting for the Waterloo Education Foundation Inc. (WEFI) on Wednesday, November 11, the WEFI Board of Directors passed a motion to provide $30,000 to help local organizations supporting student nutrition in Waterloo Region.

Nutrition for Learning, Food4Kids Waterloo Region and the May Court Club of Kitchener-Waterloo were selected to each receive a portion of this funding. The service they provide to our students and their families is instrumental in combating food insecurity in Waterloo Region.

“I want to, again, thank the Board of Directors for their leadership and support of donating to these important local organizations,” said John Bryant, president of WEFI. “Food insecurity is an issue many families in our community experience daily. As the challenges of the pandemic continue, we find the need is greater to support our community however we can. We are proud to do our part to help these groups as they continue to support our students.”

Matthew Gerard, treasurer and secretary of WEFI, added that “it’s my hope that this small gesture will provide students and families in Waterloo Region with a measure of relief in this challenging time.”

“I am proud to be part of this effort to support the important work these organizations do to help those in need in Waterloo Region,” said Jayne Herring, a member of the WEFI Board of Directors and Chairperson of the WRDSB Board of Trustees. “Thank you to all of our donors who have helped us to make this support a reality.”

What this means for our community

  • Nutrition for Learning will be able to provide 500 holiday packages to families in need, containing two weeks of snacks each
  • The May Court Club of Kitchener-Waterloo will be able to meet the much increased need for their food box program in schools
  • Food4Kids will be able to continue filling food security gaps for children aged 1 to 14 in our community
