WRDSB schools are places where children learn, grow, and discover through a balance of:

  • Direct instruction
  • Inquiry
  • Play-based learning

Our caring, highly trained educators use the Ontario Kindergarten Curriculum to guide learning in ways that nurture curiosity, confidence, and build a strong foundation for future academic success.

Learning in Kindergarten is organized into four interconnected areas:

Foundations of Literacy and Mathematics

Children begin developing early reading skills by exploring how letters and sounds work together. Students then blend these sounds into simple words with the goal to read, write, and understand text.

In mathematics, students learn to count, estimate, add, subtract, and share equally. They explore shapes and patterns, collect and organize data, and use a variety of tools and strategies to make sense of math in the world around them.

Problem Solving and Innovation

Through hands-on exploration, children begin building the foundations of scientific thinking. They learn to understand how things work by:

  • Asking questions
  • Investigating problems
  • Designing and creating
  • Engaging in imaginative, inquiry-based play

Self-Regulation and Well-Being

Kindergarten students learn important life skills, like:

  • Recognizing and regulating their emotions
  • Trying new experiences
  • Building motor skills
  • Understanding how their actions can create positive outcomes for themselves and others

Belonging and Contributing

Children explore their place in the world by connecting with their classroom, school, and wider communities. They develop a strong sense of self and celebrate their unique strengths. Through art, music, drama, and dance, they discover creative ways to express themselves and share their ideas.
